| Young children can be remarkable creatures. We long for their arrival when they are in the womb, cry at their appearance when they are birthed, and scream at their actions when they are toddlers and older. My sister has a one year old, three years old, and a thirteen year old. The oldest child has a quite disposition and is easily entertained by his own projects, television, friends, video games, etc. Since birth he has been a low maintenance child. The second child is quite the opposite. He is a delight yet quite the opposite from the previous child’s disposition. He is busy, talkative, and if he doesn’t get his way, he can be incorrigible. It is very important to consider each child’s personality. It will matter if you have an only child or a sibling set of more than two. It is wise to remember that each child is “a little person”. With this in mind, we can understand that the same things you like, they like…ice cream, cake, or broccoli. This child is apart of you and your child’s other parent. The personality you display when you are not controlling yourself and the personality of your spouse/partner will all be displayed in your children. As adults we tend to forget all of the different scenarios we have experienced through the years. Our children however, do not yet know how to display self-control so it is our challenge to teach them through consistency, repetition, while upholding them with praise or correction depending upon their response. One thing to be assured of is children respond to their environment. What are you displaying in your environment? |
