| We’ve all seen the ads in magazines, newspapers and online: “Earn Income from Home.” Assemble this, stuff that, study this, secret shop for that. Most of these ads are scams or require a significant amount of money to get started. Many of us would like to stay home to raise our children full time but still need and want to earn an income. So, how can stay-at-home mothers make money? 1. Start a home daycare or babysitting service. If you don’t want to be tied to your home from morning to early evening Monday through Friday, consider starting a drop-in service during evenings and weekends. This has the added benefit of providing playmates for your children. Sittercity.com and craigslist.org are great places to get your name out there.2. Sell items on eBay and Craigslist. Do you like to shop at yard sales? Do you simply have too much stuff? Resell your former treasures on eBay and Craigslist. You can even offer to help your friends and family to pare down and make a little extra money themselves by selling their old books, clothes, furniture and/or assorted items for them and taking a small commission. There are many great books about selling on eBay at the library to help you get started.3. Design websites. Even if you’re not a tech-y, you can probably use a website template. Place ads in local newspapers and on free sites online offering your service. Yahoo.com has very easy-to-use and attractive website templates and godaddy.com has affordable shopping carts that use Paypal.4. Participate in focus groups. Companies are always looking for people who meet specific criteria to give their opinions about their products and services -- and they pay them well for it. Check out findfocusgroups.com and do an online search of your own to find other listings.5. Cook dinner for other families. You have to make dinner for your family every night anyway, so why not make a little extra? Make a flyer and pass it out to the local business owners around your town. You can offer to make an entire week’s worth of meals and deliver them once a week to your customers in reusable Ziploc or Tupperware packaging. 6. Become an Avon Independent Sales Representative. If you have an extensive network of friends and family and $10, you can get started immediately earning an income. Just be careful not to buy too many brochures or too much product to start. The real key to a substantial income with this company is to teach your friends and people you meet how to sell, too.7. Start an errand running service for the elderly. This one can be a bit difficult as you cart your kids in and out of the car and around town, but at least they get to be with you while you work and they’re out and about in the community. Plus, most elderly people love to see kids and you will be offering a valuable service. Contact your local senior center for help getting started. Most of these ideas are free or almost free from the outset. Some may be a little too entrepreneurial for your comfort zone. But if you keep your eyes on the prize -- being able to stay home for your children while earning an income -- you may be surprised at what you are able to accomplish. |
